day 87

Not sure if the four soft balls, two lacrosse balls, and two baseballs my kids rounded up from the woods surrounding the high school constitute litter, but the plastic water and sport drink bottles I gathered from the perimeter of the tennis courts at the little library sure do.

What you really need when you collect litter is two plastic bags to separate your finds into, one for recyclables and one for trash. One of the most discouraging things about all the water bottles that wind up as litter (besides the fact that they are inevitably bound for the Pacific garbage patch) is that PET is the easiest plastic to recycle and the plastic that most commonly is recycled. Most water and sports bottle lack the bottle deposit incentive however and if they’re not simply tossed on the ground, they’re tossed in the nearest trash thereby squandering their recycling possibilities.
